A delegation from Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences visited Faculty of Business and Management, UiTM Puncak Alam on 25 September 2015. The delegation was composed by 5 personalities and was headed by Prof Dr Swen Schneider, Dean Faculty of Business and Law, Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. They were greeted by our Dean, Prof Dr Zaini Abdullah and the top management members. The delegation was briefed on the various programs and facilities offered by our faculty. Both parties discussed ways of coordination between two sides, in addition to proposals for future cooperation, exchange of experiences and research in academic world. Expanding the Universe: Social Sukuk as a New Islamic Financial Instrument for Social Innovations Professor Saadiah Mohamad This research is a study of the role of Islamic finance in the social sector. It examines a claim among critics that there is an inherent weakness of the present day Islamic banking and finance industry in terms of its underdeveloped social sector. The objectives of this study are firstly to assess the existing industry’s engagement and contribution to the social sector. Secondly to have a historical enquiry into the modes of financing social investment such as housing, education and healthcare in past Islamic civilisations. Thirdly to perform case studies on the latest developments in social impact investing both in the conventional and shariah compliant space. The fourth objective is to propose a framework for the structuring of a new product called social or community sukuk which is a shariah compliant instrument that provides financing for social investment or community based projects on the basis of crowd funding. This research has several benefits: the findings and resulting literature contributes towards a revival of Islamic finance in the negleted social sector and motivates a discourse on the role of Islamic finance in the social sector. This study on socially responsible and impact sukuk will serve to contribute towards bridging the gap between Islamic and conventional markets. Developments in the SRI sukuk could benefit both markets simulataneously by expanding the universe of Islamic finance while at the same time providing the SRI community with a new kind of ethical investment.
